3 Thoughtful and Sustainable Ways to Decorate Your Home for the Christmas Holidays

The festive season is a time of warmth, togetherness, and celebration. It's also the perfect time to infuse your home with a touch of festive decor.

However, as we become increasingly conscious of our impact on the environment, many people are seeking sustainable ways to decorate their homes during the holidays. In this blog post, i'll give you three creative and eco-friendly ways to decorate your home with thoughtful and sustainable holiday decor. And of course, infusing some vintage spirit into your aesthetic! We'll cover the art of creating dried hydrangea floral wreaths, using artisanal candles to light up your space, and repurposing French brocante items like mini soupieres for planters and candleholders.

Dried Hydrangea Floral Wreaths

When it comes to sustainable holiday decor, creating dried hydrangea floral wreaths is not only beautiful but also eco-friendly. These wreaths are perfect for adding a touch of natural elegance to your home. Here's how to make one:

Start by collecting dried hydrangea heads. I had permission to forage some from my lovely neighbours who needed to prune it this year! You can easily dry them by hanging them upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area for a few weeks. Gather some grapevine wreath bases (I like the ones you can buy at Hobbycraft) and attach the dried hydrangea blooms to the grapevine wreath using floral wire. Customise your wreath with sustainable accents like pinecones, acorns, or other natural elements and make a matching ribbin loop tie.

These are best for indoor use, so try hanging them from bedroom doors, or off the edge of paintings or mirrors for a casual, beautiful rustic floral feel to your seasonal home decor.

I've created a few limited editions of these beautiful dried hydrangea floral wreaths for the Considered Living store, in lovely shades of red and pink.

Shop them here or ask to be added to the waiting list once we've sold out!

Artisanal Candles for Warmth and Ambiance
Candles have long been an essential part of holiday decor, and opting for artisanal and sustainable Christmas candles adds a touch of thoughtful luxury while supporting the local people that crafted them. Here's how to incorporate them into your holiday decor:
Choose candles made from natural and sustainable materials like soy or beeswax. These options burn cleaner and last longer than traditional paraffin candles. The holiday gift candles in our store are blended beeswax and are made out of clay for a rustic, earthy aesthetic.
Look for special details, such as the exquisite rose detailing on our best selling artisanal candles from India, or try something different, like this set of sustainable tea lights (much more pleasing than the shallow tin versions!)
To add a personal touch, consider decorating the candleholders with twine, ribbon, or even a sprig of holly or mistletoe.
And place on low tables and around your home for a constant soft glow!

Repurposing French Brocante for Planters and Candleholders
French brocante, or antique items, have a timeless charm that can add a touch of history and sustainability to your holiday decor. One creative way to use them is by repurposing mini French soupieres (those tiny little white ironstone bowls you see in French restaurants) as planters and candleholders.
We have lots of these mini French ironstone soupieres in stock at the moment as part of our Christmas collection. I've used moss, pot pourri and mini candles to style ours.
Hunt for vintage French soupieres at local flea markets, antique shops, or even online marketplaces. Clean them thoroughly and consider giving them a fresh coat of paint or leaving them as they are, with their original patina.
Plant some small, festive greenery or succulents in the soupieres for a unique and eye-catching centrepiece. Alternatively, use the mini soupieres as candleholders for tea lights, casting a warm and cosy glow on your festive holiday gatherings.

Decorating your home for the holidays can be both beautiful and eco-friendly.

This holiday season, let your decor be a reflection of your values, and inspire others to embrace thoughtful and sustainable holiday traditions.
